Getting around Ella
The village is walkable, and most sights are reached on foot or by tuk-tuk. Ella is a stop on the hill-country railway, a slow and famously scenic ride from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya.
Best time to visit Ella
Roughly January to April, when mornings are usually clearest, though hill-country showers can come in any month.
Top things to do in Ella
- Hike up Little Adam's Peak, an easy climb through tea fields with wide valley views
- Watch a train cross the Nine Arch Bridge, a colonial-era stone viaduct in the jungle
- Climb Ella Rock, a longer and steeper half-day hike with a big view at the top
- Tour a tea factory to see how the leaf is withered, rolled and dried
- Stop at Ravana Falls, a tall waterfall just down the road towards Wellawaya
What to eat in Ella

Local etiquette
Dress modestly at temples, remove your shoes, and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue. Ask before photographing tea pickers.
Staying connected
Dialog and Mobitel coverage is good in the village, and nearly every guesthouse and café has Wi-Fi.
Staying safe
Many people walk the railway line to the Nine Arch Bridge, so step well clear when a train comes. On Ella Rock, people may claim the path is closed to sell you a guide, so start early and use an offline map.
A local tip
Climb Little Adam's Peak just after sunrise, before the mist rises and the path fills up.
