Where to stay in Cairns
- The Esplanade: the waterfront centre, with the free lagoon pool, backpacker hostels and the night market.
- Palm Cove: a quieter palm-lined beach village about 25 minutes' drive north.
- Trinity Beach: a relaxed northern beach suburb with a few cafés and holiday apartments.
Getting around Cairns
The centre is small and walkable, and Sunbus local buses run to the northern beaches. Most reef and rainforest tours include hotel pick-up, and a hire car makes the Daintree and the Tablelands far easier.
Best time to visit Cairns
June to October, the dry season, when days are warm and humidity is lower; November to April is hot, wet and the cyclone season.
Top things to do in Cairns
- Take a day boat to the outer Great Barrier Reef to snorkel or try an introductory dive
- Swim in the Esplanade Lagoon, a free saltwater pool on the waterfront
- Walk the boardwalks through the Cairns Botanic Gardens and the mangroves nearby
- Browse the Cairns Night Markets for cheap food and souvenirs
- Cool off in the freshwater swimming holes at Crystal Cascades, about 20 minutes' drive from the centre
What to eat in Cairns
- Barramundi: a mild white fish from tropical rivers and coasts, often grilled or battered
- Tropical fruit: mangoes, lychees and rambutans in season at Rusty's Markets on weekends
- Prawns: local prawns, often bought cooked by the kilo and eaten cold
- Meat pie: a hand-sized pastry filled with minced beef and gravy, sold at bakeries everywhere
Day trips from Cairns
- Kuranda: a rainforest village reached by the Kuranda Scenic Railway or the Skyrail cableway, about two hours by train
- Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation: ancient rainforest meeting the reef, roughly two and a half hours' drive north
- Fitzroy Island: rainforest walks and coral just offshore, about 45 minutes by ferry
Local etiquette
Dress is casual, but put on a shirt and shoes to go into shops and restaurants. On reef trips, never touch or stand on the coral, and use reef-safe sunscreen if you can.
Staying connected
Prepaid SIMs from Telstra, Optus and Vodafone need your passport to activate; Telstra has the widest coverage on the road north to the Daintree, and expect limited or no signal out on the reef.
Staying safe
Saltwater crocodiles live in rivers, estuaries and along the coast, so obey warning signs and swim only in the lagoon or netted areas. From roughly November to May, wear a stinger suit in the sea to protect against box jellyfish.
A local tip
Choose an outer reef trip over an inner one if you can: the boat ride is longer, but the water is usually clearer.
Visas:rules depend on your nationality and change often – check your own government's official travel advice before you go.
