Where to stay in Santorini
- Fira: the main town on the caldera edge, with the bus hub, nightlife and the widest choice of places to stay.
- Oia: the postcard village at the northern tip, famous for sunsets and very crowded at dusk.
- Kamari and Perissa: black-sand beach towns on the east coast with cheaper stays and a relaxed feel.
Getting around Santorini
KTEL buses run from Fira to most villages, beaches and the port, though they fill up in summer. Car and scooter hire covers the rest, but the roads are narrow and busy, so drive carefully.
Best time to visit Santorini
May to June and late September to October, warm enough to swim with fewer crowds than July and August.
Top things to do in Santorini
- Walk the caldera path from Fira to Oia, about 10 kilometres along the cliff edge
- Visit Akrotiri, a Bronze Age town preserved under volcanic ash
- Take a boat to the volcano at Nea Kameni, then swim in the warm springs off neighbouring Palea Kameni
- Taste Assyrtiko wines at one of the island's family wineries
- Climb to Ancient Thera on the ridge of Mesa Vouno above Kamari
What to eat in Santorini
- Fava: a smooth purée of the island's yellow grass pea (not a split pea), usually topped with onion and capers
- Tomatokeftedes: fritters made with the island's small, intensely sweet tomatoes
- Assyrtiko: a crisp, mineral white wine from vines trained low in basket shapes against the wind
- Vinsanto: a sweet wine made from grapes dried in the sun
Day trips from Santorini
- Thirassia: a quiet island on the far side of the caldera, a short boat ride from Ammoudi below Oia
- Ios: beaches and a hilltop old town, under an hour by fast ferry
Local etiquette
Many of the white rooftops and blue domes are private homes or terraces, so do not climb onto them for photos. Cover shoulders when entering churches.
Staying connected
EU roaming applies, prepaid SIMs from the Greek operators are sold in Fira, and most accommodation and cafés have Wi-Fi.
Staying safe
Quad and scooter accidents are a common cause of injury, so wear a helmet or choose the bus. The island is volcanic and seismically active, so respect posted rockfall closures, especially at Red Beach.
A local tip
Watch sunset from Imerovigli or Pyrgos instead of Oia, for the same light with far fewer people.
